Evolution as Applied to Nursery Rhymes

  • 7th Feb, 2010 at 9:54 PM
Reading
--> Because this rhyme keeps coming up in things I read. George Orwell's 1984, Neverwhere fanfiction

An English nursery rhyme tied in with churches across London. Also associated with a game much like 'London Bridge is Falling Down' and ends with a tug or war.

Oranges and lemons
Say the bells of St Clements
You owe me five farthings
Say the bells of St Martins
When will you pay me?
Say the bells of Old Bailey
When I grow rich
Say the bells of Shoreditch
When will that be?
Say the bells of Stepney
I'm sure I don't know
Says the great bell at Bow
(Lines that appear later on...)
Here comes a candle to light you to bed
Here comes a chopper to chop off your head
Chop chop chop chop the last man's head!

What animal best represents your inner spirit? If you had to wake up as an animal, which one would you choose, and why? Are your two answers the same? Why or why not?

Inner spirit, hmm, that's a tough one. I'm wavering between the common raven and the grey wolf. Both have characteristics that I strongly associate with. Most likely wolf, due to vertigo.

As to what I would wake up as, right now? Probably a cat of some form or another. Ocelot or snow leopard I think.

The difference in choices would result in the dichotomy of who I think I am, and the difference in perception. Also, catnaps.

So, I first heard this song at a diversity assembly, blasting out my eardrums from the speakers, and subsequently for the rest of my school year. When do I listen to it non stop now, nearly a year after? Calc class is not the time to have upbeat dance music in another language (mostly) that you can't understand stuck in your brain. Not when you have to pay attention, at least.

Now I'm going to google the lyrics in english.

The first TEN people who comment in this post get to request pretty much anything but a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. If you absolutely can't write, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to offer drawings or icons or something instead.

Too Tired for Witticisms: Next Time

  • 23rd Jan, 2010 at 4:44 AM
Reeeeeally now?
When a fire alarm occurs at four in the morning, I need to remember to:

- It is winter. It is cold outside. Sneakers just doesn't cut it when there's snow on the ground.
- GRAB A JACKET. It is hanging by the door.
- My phone. Don't just unplug it from the plug. Heck, grab the charger too if I have to.
- Glasses. It helps being able to see.
- Wallet. (Check)

Note to self: Find out what's wrong with C Mid and Upper. Fire Extinguisher went off, set off alarm. Habitants now sleeping in main lounge.

No fun to be had at all. STAIRS. Random guys stopping in the middle of a flight and being pushed between them. Argh. And I bet we looked like that video with the marching penguins going back inside. Diving back in bed.

Edit: 5 AM, yet another one. This time, someone pulled it. 7 min. to 6. Is there a pattern?

A name's a name's a name's a name. A defining characteristic, of course thought had to go into it. Ash, oak and thorn. Three plants that are quite deeply entwined within European folklore, back when fairy mounds and wilder woods dominated the landscape, not just of the imagination, but of the psyche of the people. As to stories... *smiles* People know them, tell them still. The legends, myths, and superstitions still are passed around in one form or another.

Edit: First fandoms.

Reading
suppose

Life is an old man carrying flowers on his head.

young death sits in a cafe
smiling, a pierce of money held between
his thumb and first finger

(i say "will he buy flowers" to you
and "Death is young
life wears velour trousers
life totters, life has a beard" i

say to you who are silent.--"Do you see
Life? he is there and here,
or that, or this
or nothing or an old man 3 thirds
asleep, on his head
flowers, always crying
to nobody something about les
roses les bluets
yes,
will He buy?
Les belles bottes--oh hear
, pas cheres")

and my love slowly answered I think so. But
I think I see someone else

there is a lady, whose name is Afterwards
she is sitting beside young death, is slender;
likes flowers.

Fanfiction is a creative outlet for you. You don't intentionally write it, it just happens. You find inspiration in several fandoms, but are not obsessed with only one.

You like to explore "what if" situations. What if this character had never made this very choice? What if this event had taken place sooner, never, elsewhere? What if these people had never met?

You are likely to write Alternative Universes, fan seasons or sequels and just follow your (sometimes pretty strange) plot bunnies.

In Life's name and for Life's sake, I assert that I will employ the Art which is its gift in Life's service alone, rejecting all other usages. I will guard growth and ease pain. I will fight to preserve what grows and lives well in its own way; and I will change no object or creature unless its growth and life, or that of the system of which it is part, are threatened. To these ends, in the practice of my Art, I will put aside fear for courage, and death for life, when it is right to do so -- till Universe's end. I will look always toward the Heart of Time, where all times are one, where all our sundered worlds lie whole, as they were meant to be."

- Diane Duane

Let us read and let us dance- two amusements that will never do any harm to the world. - Voltaire

You must understand the whole of life, not just one little part of it. That is why you must read, that is why you must look at the skies, that is why you must sing, and dance, and write poems, and suffer, and understand, for all that is life. - Unknown
